Canopy, Melbourne
A combination of solid, opaque and semi-transparent elements, similar in material to the fabric of the city, forms a sinuous, floating, coloured canopy over Kirks Lane, Melbourne. This produces a light, transparent, multi-coloured sunshade that hovers over the lane and projects out over the footpath below.
Canopy generates its own light via solar panels that are interspersed with the timber, acrylic and glass panels. Salvaged materials, specifically acrylic off-cuts, driftwood and re-used industrial timber, including pallet timbers, rest on a very light frame, which is suspended from the neighbouring building on fine stainless-steel cables.
